History/
Background

In the Meiji Era (1912 onwards), Yoshigoro Akiyama was I asked by Franklin Packard to make a new type of goldfish by cross-breeding the Ryukin and the Calico Telescope. Since the client was American, it was named ‘calico’ because it means ‘spots’ in English, and they were made for exportation. After this kind of goldfish appeared, similar colored goldfish started to get called ‘calico~’. However, when people say ‘calico’, they are referring to the Calico Ryukin.

Features

The body colors can be light-blue, red, black, and white, and a characteristic of its body is its mosaic transparent scales . This kind of goldfish is cute and beautiful so it is certainly valued to appreciate them.

Acquisition difficulties

Normal. They are rarely sold at home centers but you can find them in goldfish speciality shops. Distribution amounts are high.

Rearing difficulties Normal. In the same way as the Ryukin, there are no particular difficulties if you follow the basic rules.
Details of the above photo

The goldfish in the picture is the goldfish that received first prize in the Calico Ryukin division at the 2006 Goldfish Evaluation Convention in Shizuoka Prefecture. Their round, strong body is incredible. Essentially, the Calico Ryukin is best viewed from the side.

Other

'Calico' generally indicates a red and white pattern, in reference to the body coloration of goldfish. But in the original Japanese 'calico' means a dotted pattern. Generally, 'Calico Ryukin' means Ryukin with a red-white body color, however, if you follow the original meaning, ‘Calico Ryukin’ means Ryukin with a dotted pattern.
