History/
Background

The Bubble Eye was treated as a closely guarded treasure for a long time in China, but it is not known how it came to exist. In ancient times, only those of a high status could rear them. When the new government system was established (following the abolishment of the dynasty system), the Bubble Eye started to be known to the public.
It was introduced to Japan in 1958 and Shigetoshi Ehar, who worked at Sankyo Fisheries, imported huge amounts of Chinese goldfish in 1961, including the Bubble Eye, and it became more widely known.

Features Upward-facing eyeballs and bubble-like sacs on the both sides of the eyes are the Bubble Eye’s feature. The sacs are filled with lymph fluids. (Bubble Eyes without a dorsal fin are the most common type in Japan.)
This Chinese goldfish has a very humorous appearance.
Acquisition difficulties Normal. Its charming and funny appearance has made this goldfish very popular, making it the representative of imported Chinese goldfish in Japan. Since there is a high demand for this goldfish, distribution amounts are high.
Rearing difficulties

Normal. There are no particular difficulties. You only have to be careful of the sacs under the eyes because they can rupture. Once the sacs rupture, they will not grow back.

Details of the above photo The Bubble Eye in the picture is the goldfish that won first prize in the One Year Old Bubble Eye section at the 2006 Goldfish Evaluation Convention in Shizuoka Prefecture.
Other Because of its appearance, this goldfish is named ‘Bubble Eye’ in English, and ‘Hamatouyui’ in Chinese.
