History/
Background

The Butterfly Tail is a native Chinese goldfish that was brought to Japan in the early 1980s. It is not known how they came to exist.
There are lots of imported Butterfly Tails but is currently also produced in Japan. It is named ‘Butterfly Tail’ because the shape of the tail fin is similar to a butterfly.

Features The Butterfly Tail is very similar to the Telescope in appearance, however, when they are viewed from top, the shape of the tail fin reminds us of a butterfly. This is their most unique feature.
Typically, they are categorized as a pop-eyed goldfish but sometimes the Butterfly Tail with normal eyes is imported. The Butterfly Tail with a panda-like pattern (black and white) is called the ‘Panda’ and those with a red and black pattern are called the ‘Lesser Panda’.
Acquisition difficulties Somewhat difficult. The Panda Butterfly Tail is popular among goldfish lovers but they are hard to acquire.
Rearing difficulties Normal. There is no particular difficulty in rearing.
Details of the above photo The Panda Butterfly Tail in the picture is the goldfish that received first prize in the one year old Butterfly Tail section. It has a typical panda pattern.
Other The Suzuki Fish Farm in Saitama Prefecture, famous for its Calico Oranda, also produces wonderful Butterfly Tails.
