History/ Background |
The Oranda was made by selecting and stabilizing a mutation of the Ryukin which developed a lump on its head. It was brought to Nagasaki Prefecture from China via Ryukyu in sometime between 1789 and 1800. It was named ‘Oranda Shishigashira’ meaning ‘Dutch Lion Head’ because all rare imports were called ‘Dutch goods’ due to an isolation policy of the time. Its lump on its head is reminiscent of a lion’s head. |
Features |
The Oranda has a dorsal fin, a lump on its head and a long, quadruple tail. Basically, their body color is red-and-white. This type of goldfish is characterized by its dynamic elegance, and has become one of the most popular goldfish. There are two different kinds: one with a relatively long body which has been popular for many years in Japan, and the other with a shorter body that was imported from China in recent years. |
Acquisition difficulties | Easy. You can purchase them at home centers or at ordinary goldfish shops. This type is not very rare. |
Rearing difficulties | Normal. As long as basics rearing rules are followed, there are no particular challenges in rearing this type of goldfish. However, those with an extremely round body from China are more likely to overturn as it grows. |
